Walk to Wellness
‘Walk to Wellness’ was developed by Cavan Sports Partnership as we identified a need for teens in terms of physical activity, mental health and Body Image giving the current pandemic.
The programme which targeted TY students and first years to utilise a ‘Buddy Up’ system was developed with Mental Health Ireland and Bodywhys. Participating students received a pack containing a health watch, a step record card, mental health resources and Bodywhys resources while teachers were provided with the #Morethanaselfie Bodywhys power points to be delivered as part of their SPHE classes and an Art Therapy workshop focusing on Anxiety and Resilience was also delivered to schools. Students were tasked to build their step count to 10,000 steps daily over the 6 week period with the help of their ‘buddy’.
The hugely successful initiative has been delivered in two Secondary Schools – St Mogues and St. Bricins to date with a total of 140 students completing the programme. Four additional secondary schools will commence the initiative in January.
“I liked the challenge and asking each other and the teachers how many steps they had. I felt part of a team to help my class. I liked everything about it” – Student St. Bricins
“It made me go outside and walk or run more often. Now I know that I actually enjoy it and I think I’m going to make it a habit thanks to this program” -Student St. Mogue’s
“I enjoyed getting out and exercising since the program started I became more active, I enjoyed the interesting lessons from the art therapy and bodywhys I learn a lot from their sessions.” – Student St. Mogues
